I would suggest using 1 pound per square feet of mass loaded vinyl for this application. I believe that MLV works best when it is able to resonate or move with the sound. Hence, it is always best to staple the MLV directly to the joist and studs of your ceilings and walls. It is best to use air duct silencers to completely soundproof the room.
